How likely will AI replace lawyers? It’s actually not that grim.

I appreciate the analysis by 99helpers on how likely AI will displace lawyers. They rate the risk at “medium”: “some tasks will be automated but the role is likely to evolve rather than disappear.” I agree with its logic.

The bad (where lawyers are vulnerable):

• Task automation. Lawyers are vulnerable where AI can take over work that can be automated, e.g., legal research, case law retrieval, contract review, and discovery (doc review, privilege logs).
• No physical presence required. AI can take over roles not requiring in-person work (obviously not trial lawyers, but other lawyers don’t have to be in-person).

The good (what keeps lawyers safe from AI):

• Human judgment. Lawyers can’t be replaced when advocating in the courtroom, providing “strategic legal advice in high-stakes novel situations,” or counseling clients “involving emotional judgment and trust.”
• Current regs/licenses. “Legal liability and professional responsibility rules require licensed human lawyers.” (Who says the bar isn’t necessary?)

3 plausible AI impact scenarios provided below. I agree with the first two, not sure about the third.

1. Elimination (medium risk for lawyers, 6/10): AI eliminates jobs like associate-level document and research work.
2. Transformation (medium risk for lawyers, 4/10): AI transforms jobs, where some jobs are lost but new ones created. Junior associates who focus on doc review/research and “most paralegal roles involving document processing” are at risk, but there will be new human jobs like “legal technologists” who manage the AI tools.
3. More jobs overall (low risk for lawyers, 2/10). AI makes lawyers affordable to “millions who previously couldn’t access them… Legal demand explodes as costs fall, creating more lawyer roles than AI eliminates, particularly in consumer rights, family law, and small business advising.” (Hm, this seems pretty optimistic to me.)
