What Top CEOs Look for When Hiring (in a Word)

This recent WSJ video Q&A asks top CEOs to describe in one word what they look for when hiring. I’ll save you from watching the video with this summary:

  • Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella: clarity & energy
  • Reddit CEO Steve Huffman: high skills & low ego
  • Amazon CEO Worldwide Consumer Jeff Wilke: competence
  • CAA President Richard Lovett: passion for both the client and the negotiation process

And the one trait that would cause an executive to walk away from a candidate:

  • Amazon CEO Worldwide Consumer Jeff Wilke: competitor obsession instead of consumer obsession
  • Kevin Systrom, CEO Instagram: drama

These traits are all good to keep in mind for any interview, but note how each CEO values something different. I encourage interviewees to scour the Internet and network with employees to learn the key words and pet peeves of interviewers before the meeting. They then can tailor their presentation for maximum impact.
