The 3 Most Common Ways Senior Roles Open Up In-House

  • On February 26, 2017

Bright in-house attorneys often feel stuck because the in-house org chart is so flat — the first corporate counsel level vastly outnumbers the Director, AGC, DGC and GC levels. How do you move up in this flat environment? Know that senior openings come about in 3 scenarios:

  1. Dynamic companies grow so quickly that they lack talent at senior levels. Keep your eye on these companies so you can be ready when they are.
  2. Companies with new senior management sometimes want to clean house. New managers may bring in some trusted lieutenants, but have other positions to fill. Recruiters can be handy here.
  3. Attrition. Unfortunately internal people are often jockeying for the role.

I will discuss next week 5 ways to position yourself.
