3 Common Interview Fails

  • On February 2, 2019

For those who land the interview but not the job, this Forbes article is helpful. It identifies some common ways to fail:

  1. Rambling. This one is a main culprit for lawyers. Get to the point and be interesting! Line up examples to show you understand the employer’s needs and you have the track record to address them. Time yourself so your sounds bites fall under 90 seconds.
  2. Lack of preparation. Just because you have the right pedigree and experience does not mean you will get the job. Think about the employer’s industry, department, etc., and explain how you can help.
  3. Lack of enthusiasm. Your delivery is very important! You may find it unnatural to keep looking people in the eye, smiling, and delivering information with so much energy and such good posture. But it’s an arms race. Everyone else is doing it, and if you don’t, you will stand out, and not in a good way. Be authentic, but also be the most charming version of yourself.
