How to Answer the Interview Question “Where Else Are You Applying?”

When preparing for an interview, you already know to prep for the question “Why are you interested in us?”, but you should also be ready for its close cousin “Where else are you applying?” The interviewer is asking to assess your interest level. For example, if you say you are only interested in software, would it make sense you are applying to a hardware or life sciences company? Or if you say you like big companies, why are you applying to startups? Or if you indicate you are interested in this job because of the management opportunities, why are you applying to non-management jobs?

The easiest solution is to prep beforehand. Troubleshoot potential questions, and edit the list of companies you will say you are interested in. Then explain why you are most interested in the company at hand.

Do list well-regarded companies interested in you. And if another company tells you it’s going to make an offer, you may want to disclose that to other employers you are talking to. It’s human nature that you become more wanted when others want you. Indicate, however, you are still very interested in the company at hand and why so you motivate the hiring manager to expedite your candidacy.
