3 Easy & High-Impact Things to Do for Your Career

  • On October 18, 2020

Are there easy things you can do for your career that will make a difference? Absolutely! Below are three that I bet you haven’t thought of!

  1. Ask friends who are happy at their jobs to refer you when they get called by a recruiter. Pick friends whose jobs you like to ensure calls from the right space. You will be called back. Whenever I talk to a spot-on candidate who isn’t interested but offers up a friend, I always call that person.
  2. Ask external counsel to put you on panels or talks. Law firms want to stay in your good graces so they will be happy to include you, and they offer events that people in your space are interested in, especially changing areas of the law. After you speak on a panel, networking is easy; people will come to you with questions. Add this event to your resume and LinkedIn profile. It’s tangible evidence of your expertise that prospective employers can find.
  3. Ask your old clients and friends at law firm to let you know when their companies or clients are hiring. Your old clients are a great referral because they know what you are good at and can convince the hiring manager to give you a shot. Law firm partners are often asked if they know any lawyers good for an in-house role. They are motivated to refer people who will keep them as external counsel, and they don’t want to give up their favorite associates!
