Can You Get Feedback on Why You Were Rejected?

  • On April 23, 2017

Companies interview many candidates, and only one person can get the job, which results in many rejections. Rejected candidates would definitely benefit from finding out why, but can they get that information? Yes, it can happen, especially if:

  1. Interviewees established rapport with the interviewers, who are then more willing to help.
  2. Interviewees call interviewers (as opposed to email) to find out what happened because interviewers who are lawyers may avoid committing to a written response.
  3. Interviewees ask nicely. One person got an answer on why he was passed over after what he felt was a good interview by asking “Would you be willing to provide me with any feedback so I might be better prepared for future opportunities?”

Even though your odds are not great that you’ll get this feedback, you should still try because if you succeed, it’s invaluable.
