How to Choose Among Offers

  • On April 12, 2015

Congrats! You have multiple offers. Now how do you decide which one to take? A couple factors to consider beyond compensation:

  1. The actual role. Take the job whose role you would really enjoy, not the one you think you should be excited about. Andy Bryant, the chair of Intel’s board, says, “The thing I learned is that if you’re not doing the job you want to do, it will reflect on your performance. You’re better off taking the the job you’re excited about than to do the one you think somebody wants you to do.”
  2. Expected trajectory. While one job might pay more now and have a good title, the other may expose you to things you are looking for, e.g., bigger role, better industry, stronger team, etc. Sheryl Sandberg says on the job to take, “Look for growth. Look for the teams that are growing quickly. Look for the companies that are doing well. Look for a place where you feel that you can have a lot of impact.“
