High Return Job Strategies

  • On June 6, 2021

Job searching is amorphous; you never know what will lead to your next job. But I like these job search strategies from career guru Jessica Hernandez which she describes as high return on investment.  You can apply them to your legal search, and I have added my own tips especially useful for the legal market.

  1. Target potential employers. I would start with a comprehensive list, e.g., for top 150 Bay Area companies, and pick your top 5-8 based on industry, size, trajectory, culture/reputation, location, etc. Cultivate contacts there. By following these companies you can impress people from these companies when you meet them.
  2. Network. Studies show your next job will likely come from a referral, so build your contacts, whether on LinkedIn or live (finally an option as we are getting vaccinated!). See here for my top networking tips, including how to do it painlessly.
  3. Connect with top recruiters in your industry. Yes, I agree with this one. Trusted ones can get you warm intros and feedback straight from the hiring manager. See here on how to evaluate a recruiter.
  4. Prepare for your interview. This one is key and within your control (versus your grades, the school you went to, where you previously worked, etc.) See here for my interview tips.

Deploy all the above strategies together to accelerate your search!
