Should You Include Interests on Your Resume?

  • On May 9, 2016

Attorneys sometimes list their interests at the end of their resume, I think as a Hail Mary to save a sinking interview. Is this tactic effective? Generally, no.

You should be guiding the interview, not stooping to discuss your hobbies when conversation fails. Every moment is important in an interview, from setting a positive first impression to explaining how you can help immediately and how you’d stay for the long run. You should have stories prepared and be working hard to fit them in. If mutual interests come up organically, great (since you should connect with your interviewer).

The only people who use this interests line well are Olympic athletes or tech gurus. It’s assumed you read, exercise and travel, so use the limited space on your resume wisely.
