Top 5 Things to Avoid in a Job Search

  • On November 2, 2014

A good article on what not to do:

  1. Apply online. Except for people with the golden resume (top 20 law school, AmLaw training,  transactional skills, prior in-house, and in the 4-9 year range), don’t expect a response for online submissions.
  2. Apply for jobs that do not  match your skills. Employers are looking for immediate help, not someone to train.
  3. Say “I’m a fast learner.” Show you have the underlying skills and can transition easily.
  4. Ask strangers to pass on your resume. You need to build rapport (and ideally offer something of value) before you ask a favor like submitting your resume for you. Also, people who know your work and personality are the best spokespeople for you, not strangers.
  5. Check in too often. By all means, follow up with HR, your recruiter, or prospective manager, but do it judiciously.
