3 Ways to Accelerate Your Career!

I recently spoke to two in-house lawyers who have successfully accelerated their careers. Their top 3 tips:

1. Befriend your clients. Clients will then approach you early and often. From these conversations, you can get the big picture about the business goals, product roadmaps, risk tolerance, etc. than if you kept partners at arms’ length (even if you are giving them good legal advice).
2. Volunteer for extra work. Yes, you won’t get paid for the extra projects you take on, but if you identify gaps and take on the task of filling them well, your manager and the team will definitely notice.
3. Don’t expect immediate accolades. If you do your job (and additional tasks!), it’s human nature to want instant recognition. Building relationships and getting recognized can take time, however, and are so worth the investment. Don’t get frustrated if things are happening slowly. If you’re doing great work and impressing the right people, your career is on track!
