WSJ’s “New Coveted Resume Line”: What is It?

  • On October 27, 2024

I fell for the WSJ’s article cleverly headlined “The New Coveted Résumé Line: Flipping Burgers.” Apparently fast food experience on your resume is now coveted: “A stint in fast food is a badge of honor for business leaders who want to be viewed as humble and relatable—and proof that they worked to get where they are.”

I agree grit, multi-tasking, and communication are all skills learned from restaurant jobs and directly apply to an in-house job, but no employer has EVER asked me for that kind of background. In case you are wondering, is your hospitality background worth bringing up for a job in a non-hospitality field? Only if you can quickly weave that into your origin story building to a bigger point (like I have seen Jessica Nguyen, DGC of Docusign, give an example of thinking critically and giving excellent customer service while working for a restaurant). For in-house interviews, I do recommend explaining memorably how your career arc leads you perfectly to the job at hand.
