Start Your New Job on the Right Track!

  • On February 2, 2015

Orient yourself on your new job:

  1. Find out where power flows. Start with the org chart. Know who the important execs are, and who gets priority.
  2. Understand the business model so you can give solutions, not conservative advice. Review the important products and initiatives. Read the playbook and standard forms.
  3. Know the hot buttons (and don’t push them).
  4. Learn the expectations of your boss, colleagues, and clients, especially on turn-around time, risk tolerance, and preferred communication style (e.g., voicemail, email, or in-person).
  5. Build rapport with your colleagues and partners so you can learn how things get done in this new environment. Do not eat alone at your desk — go out and meet people!
