Jeff Bezos’s main criterion for promoting and hiring is not passion or IQ. It’s being right most of the time. Effective lawyers must have this ability. Indeed, our job is to predict likely outcomes and mitigate the downside. If we are any good, we are right most of the time and should have clear metrics of success. Include some of these key stats in your resume, profile, and performance reviews. Show you are in fact usually right with hard evidence!
And his other 3 criteria are worth noting too:
- Will you admire this person?
- Will this person raise the average level of effectiveness of the group they’re entering?
- Along what dimensions might this person be a superstar? This one is to cultivate a diverse workplace.
