3 Painless Ways for Lawyers to Self-Promote (Sorry, This is Critical for Interviews!)

  • On December 29, 2018

Our jobs as lawyers is to advocate for others. Unfortunately, we are bad at advocating for ourselves even when we should, e.g., for interviews or pitches.

Here are three ways to self-promote naturally:

  1. Tell a relevant success story, complete with a beginning, middle, and end. This engaging way to get key points across won’t bore or scare away listeners.
  2. When telling your story, include the hard work you put in. Studies show people like you more when you explain the effort you put in, versus jumping straight to the success part. Plus, it makes the story more interesting.
  3. Talk about clients you like and how gratifying it was to help them. It’s easier to talk up your client than to talk up yourself. Your delivery will be more natural and engaging. Close with how much you enjoyed working with that client — the listener will understand the feeling is mutual without your having to brag.
