Interview Questions to Prep For (in Order of Frequency & with Guide to Answers!)

  • On April 1, 2022

Interviews for in-house jobs are generally straightforward. Here are the questions you should prep for, listed in order of frequency and complete with links to good answers!

  1. Tell me about yourself. (See here and here on how to answer.)
  2. Why are you interested in this opportunity? (See here and here on how to answer.)
  3. What kind of relevant work have you done? (See here. See also here on how to quantify your achievements.)
  4. Why do you want to leave your current employer? (See here.)
  5. Can you explain (substantive legal question)? How would you handle (business hypo the company would face)? How would you handle (interpersonal matter lawyers often face clients who don’t want to follow your advice, colleagues who don’t agree, etc.)? (See here and here on how to handle behavioral questions. See here on handling hypos.)
  6. What are your compensation expectations? (See here.)
  7. Where else are you applying? (See here.)
  8. What are your weaknesses? OK this one is rare, but you need to prep for this because it’s such a classic interview question that if you didn’t, you will look bad. (See here.)
