Proven scripts for negotiating in-house pay

  • On December 7, 2025

When you get an offer, it’s always worth negotiating respectfully! This post gives 10 good scripts. The ones that work best for Bay Area in-house jobs:

  1. Citing another offer (this is the strongest lever): “I have other offers but prefer here – can we align?” Bay Area companies are used to candidates getting multiple offers and want to win top talent, especially those most interested in them back. No employer wants to feel used.
  2. Citing the market: “Based on my research, I’m targeting $X.”; or “With my
    %
, market rate is $X-Y.” Referencing specific market data lends you credibility and helps get the request approved by HR/management.
  3. Understanding employers’ compensation philosophy and constraints so you can target the ask: “I’d like to understand your comp philosophy.” or “What flexibility exists in the full package?” or “I get the constraints. What else can bridge the gap?” In the Bay Area, comp is made up of base, standard bonus, sign-on bonus, and equity (including RSUs), and employers differ on how much flexibility they have across each.
  4. Asking for more time, again so you can build your case: “I’ll review and get back by 2026.” I recommend you sound happy and express strong interest before your so so they are more willing to grant your request.
