4 Changes in Recruiting Lawyers over the last 20 Years

  • On September 27, 2025

I’ve been recruiting lawyers in the Bay Area for 20 years now! Four ways in-house recruiting has changed:

  1. No more suits in interviews (except maybe for public biopharmas)! Business casual is almost always acceptable. You can ask your recruiter or contact at the company what is the norm.
  2. A component of the interview process can now include a writing or presentation exercise.
  3. Not all interviews are in-person. At least one by video conference is normal now, often the first screening round. Also, if an interviewer is added (or is in another part of the country), it’ll be by Zoom.
  4. LinkedIn profiles are 100% expected. Interviewers will often take a look at candidate profiles before the interview. Recruiters are often finding candidates from LinkedIn as well, rather than relying on candidates to submit applications. That means your LinkedIn profile should be professional, easy to skim, and up to date!
